Ernest Hemingway called it «Paradise on earth». And no wonder, because in the hills of Val Trebbia there flows not only wine, but pure passion.

The source of Hemingway’s famous quote has been lost in the fogs of oral history, but one thing is certain: in 1945 the Nobel Prize winning novelist travelled through Val Trebbia while accompanying a motorcade of American soldiers during the Liberation. The river that meanders through these gently rolling hills, the Appenines’ endless shades of green and the view that fades into the horizon over the distant sea – this is a landscape that stayed with the writer his entire life.

And it was precisely in this picturesque countryside that Il Poggiarello was born. The Ferrari and Perini families founded the winery in 1882, driven by the inspiration to create wines that reflected their origins. In the 1980s the fourth generation took over the estate and expanded it to 20 hectares, followed by the fifth generation, who continued the tradition with a focus on sustainability.

Indigenous grape varieties such as Barbera, Bonarda and Malvasia di Candia are representative of the winery’s authenticity and character. Traditional methods, combined with modern cellaring technology, give the wines structure, freshness and depth. To this day, Il Poggiarello is a family business, committed to preserving Piacenza’s viticultural heritage.
